Probably more in a 4 year eligibility or HS->Pros system than the
ridiculous one-and-done system. Most one-and-done candidates seem to be focused on one thing in their brief time at college, boosting their stats and building their individual brand so they can get the highest pick.

Theoretically, the most talented college players available would put in more overall effort and team defense play if they were forced to play 4 years or if they were guys that could have gone to the pros out of high school but chose college because they actually WANT to be there.

I watched the first half, and Stanford made the bone-headed decision to run as hard as they could against UNC. That's just dumb beyond belief. They have nothing like the athletes UNC has. It was a recipe for defeat. It's the dove, pecking the estridge.

If I were a Stanford player, I'd be looking to transfer to a program with a good coach.

I agree with everything but the consistency.
I'm good with, actually prefer peaks and valleys so long as the peaks are high and valleys short lived, because it is about accomplishment in individual seasons, not long term consistency, unless your long term consistency is Bama-esque.

The early years of Groh were great for the reasons you describe. At some point, Coach Welsh would have retired anyway. We're assuming he was pushed out in this thread, and I understood that to not be the case. But even if Coach Welsh stayed on, it would have only been for a few more years as he pushed into his 70's. I hope Coach Welsh has enjoyed retirement and letting go of the demands of a major college football program.

When asked about our transfers out, TB said we might take a step back in
the short run, but would be better in the long run. He was obviously referring to the fact that guys like Hunter and Huff would be getting more playing time early on than they otherwise would and would benefit from that experience. I think what we've seen thus far is exactly what TB was referring to. Huff and Hunter have had some quiet games and have also shown flashes of potential far superior to the guys that left the program. By the end of the season, Huff and Hunter(and even the other 2016 guys) will be more consistent and our team will hopefully be clicking on all cylinders at the exact right time. Had we not had any transfers out, it would be less likely our youngsters would be as prepared for the post season. This is what has me most excited about the season: we're already off to a good start and there is still plenty of room for improvement, the potential for this team is enormous!

I look at it like this. If we're going to win this game, we have to
(score more points than them, yes, I know)

come out early and punch em in the mouth like we did Miami. I don't care. Onside kick. Deep passes. Flea flickers. Just be aggressive with them. I don't think this is one of those games where we can methodically wear them down over four quarters by running the ball and playing good defense. You can't do that when a team has beaten you like four hundred years straight. We gotta pass on them and get big chunk plays that show them this isn't the same UVA team. Score a TD on a kick return. Block a kick of theirs. Something unexpected that shows them "yo, this isn't the same UVA."

I remember in 99 when the Rams, after losing for I dunno... ten years straight to the Niners got that first game in STL and were looking to prove they weren't the "same sorry ass Rams." They didn't come out and run the ball three times and see what happened. They came out firing and just took the Niners' soul from snap one. We gotta do that with them. It has to be over by the half. Can't be a back and forth game that we win close late. Not against these guys. Not until we beat them this first time. It's gotta be a 35-10 beatdown. Otherwise, it ain't gonna happen.

No problem at all with your post, as you are just trying to be helpful, but the people that actually get indignant about something so easy do crack me up.

Not sure how many McD AAs would thrive in a "defense first" program.
I've assumed that McD AAs are selected for their offensive skills with defense as an after thought. Don't misinterpret my position...if anyone could bring out the defensive talents in a player it would be TB. But realistically how many McD AAs would be willing to sit on the bench waiting for their defensive abilities to improve sufficiently to see court time?

That Buzz Williams knows how to set a schedule
that makes it easy ( TIC) to get into the tournament. Here’s how you do it. You lose to St Louis. You beat Detroit Mercy 111-79. Detroit Mercy then beats Houston Baptist 116-109 in overtime . Then lo and behold, schedule Houston Baptist for 11/21/17. When they are relegated to NIT again no one in Hokie Central will remember this stretch of games.

I dunno how much longer George would have been able to keep
that train rolling. While we may have pulled the trigger too early, we pulled it too late with Ryan and lost out on the chance to get Staley (rumored, but still...). So I dunno if it was right or wrong to pull that trigger when we did. Bowden probably hung around down in Tally too long as well. Never really know when is the right time to put the old horse out to pasture. Maybe it was too early. But who knows?

Mo was a once in a generation talent. We also had a lot of
talent backing her up, Sonnet, Miller and the little Italian MF (shoot can't think of her name). Look at what they have done since leaving UVa. The MF was ROY and Sonnet is with the national team.

Remember our best baseball team did not win the Natty, but the next one did (and they had our worst record in recent years).

That said, I am very impressed with this year's WS team. Those first and second years are talented. Maybe our best keeper and she is what -- seventeen?

Another good class and we will be set for a great three year run.

This year had three seniors and only two of them played.

But if the complaint is that we don't have a Mo, then so be it. Neither does anyone else in the NCAA. God smiled on us, when Mo walked onto the grounds.

I'd love to see what Tony can do with a class of McD's all americans
....and I am sure most of us would too. In this day and age of college basketball, this man (Tony) coaches the game the "right way" and sometimes I wonder if there are some coaches who simply rely on their players' talent/skill rather than X and O's of coaching. We are incredibly fortunate to have Tony. For so many years, I thought talent/skill mattered the most to have a winning basketball program, but....coaching the game the right way and developing players is what matters and Tony does that.

I'm hoping his definition is in the Natty convo. Part of why he left
BYU was no conference affiliation and thus tough to make the championship playoff. One would hope his reason for picking a school that has such a conference affiliation is to "fruition" us to that Natty. LOL
