When I asked my Dad what a gamecock was, he said it was a fighting chicken. At seven, I thought that was the most ridiculous thing I had ever heard.

Kyle Guy will be a plus defender his junior year
Nip this idea that he'll never be a good defender in the bud now. There is absolutely no reason he cannot be. He has a high basketball IQ, a work ethic, and good teachers. If you've decided he never will be, you won't see it when he is. I got tired of people not noticing all the ways Tobey had improved his senior year, such as catching the ball, keeping it high, dunking it, etc.

Guy already had some stretches of excellent defense this year. When he fully gets it, he can be exceptional because he will be able to use his intelligence off the ball.

All these kids are going to be very good on both ends of the floor in their third year. It's ridiculous to assume any of them won't. Next year we will see it at times.

Yes, you can
Not everyone in a 4-out has to be able to put the ball on the floor, and both of them can get their shot off from a kickout. They can come out to the arc and be effective either shooting the three if given time, pass to someone cutting inside the space created when their defender closes out the three point shot, or simply resetting with the guard with a handoff.

Also, Diakite show a dribble move a few times late in the season, some successful, some not so much. His showing that this year gives us reason to think it might be a secondary move for him beginning next year.

So, yes, either of them could be effective in a 4-out offense. In fact, they would work very well as the 4/5 in a 4-out, because they could interchange between the post and the arc freely, seeking mismatches, even sometimes inverting the offense by both coming out to the perimeter and letting Jerome, Hall, Hunter or Anthony operate in the low post area if one of them has a strength mismatch.

There are a lot of things you can do, a lot of combinations you can try to exploit the defense. Just can they execute them?

Having a successful, modern media and communications strategy to
promote University athletics in prime markets is not counter at all to anything in the mission or attitude of the University. At least since the 70s and we started trying in sports. We just didn't/can't execute.

Current admin improved tennis, baseball incredibly.
Knocked basketball out of the park after a long dark age of failure. Credit is due for those three. Football has been a complete and total dismantling that can be directly attributed to their work. Does it come out in the wash? Love(d) the Triple-Bs (good luck to Coach Boland moving forward) but not all of it imo. Plus I'm not convinced this AD was the only genius who could have pulled it off. Football management has been piss poor enough to make me question that they didn't just bumble into success elsewhere. There's just no way to be so mind-numbingly stupid yet maintain unique and brilliant insight into collegiate tennis and baseball.

I mean personnel more in terms of minute distribution
I'm sure we'll pick up another guard, but any significant 4 guard usage would require Marco to play pretty major minutes. Playing purely traditional, we'd have a rotation that looks like Hall 30 - Guy 30 -Jerome 30 - Hunter - 20 Marco -10 give or take. We basically wouldn't have a bench if we were giving even more minutes to guards. We'd realistically be playing all four current guards 30 minutes each to even be able to have 10 minutes of four guard unless Marco turns out to be a big contributor. I'm not saying he can't be, just that it's a lot to expect from a relative unknown.

Wouldn't Huff (and possibly Mamadi and Wilkins) being three point threats be enough to help offensive spacing even without them being able to drive?

Again, with this year's roster, it was a great way to use our guard depth, but I worry that we'd be vulnerable to foul trouble and injury if we relied on the guards for more than 120 minutes. I could see us playing the starters more like 34 each, but I also worry about us getting gassed at the end of the year if we tried any more than that.

Spill the beans.
At least in a general way. I mean, why not?

We know the roster management was horrendous.
Coordination between coaches ("Simms, you're in!") was horrific. Practices were soft, losing mentality was ingrained. In game coaching was atrocious. The locker room was messy. What else is there?

Yes.
Hall definitely and Hunter probably have the size/speed combination to guard opposing 4's effectively.

Diakite and Wilkins do too so I do not think we have to go with small lineups next year. But will we be able to run an effective 4-out offense with them? Neither have a quick release or can drive against a closeout.

Huff eventually could be the one who lets us have our cake and eat it too if he can defend 4's, hit the 3 and drive. Then we can defend big and still run a spread offense.

Do we have the personnel for a four guard lineup?
We seem to be borderline in guard depth for a traditional lineup. A lineup with Hunter and Hall would probably be the best four guard lineup defensively we've been able to put on the floor (assuming Hunter is a good rebounder), but I would think our scholarship situation lends itself towards mainly using 2 bigs.

I don't mind giving up defense for offense and like four guard in principle. We are always going to be a great defensive team, and you need balance to be a title contender. I'm also a big fan of spread offenses. The 2016 team was our worst defensive team of the last 4 years and our best postseason team (or at least a tie with 2014, our second worst defensive team in that stretch). The next step is developing a consistent, balanced scoring attack like we had in the 30 win years.

They are still reeling from losing the Confederate Flag
Can't see them dumping their mascot for political correctness. Their fan base would never go for it.

This year they can bask in the glory of not being as regressive as North Carolina, but the demographics of Gamecock students, and especially the demographics of Gamecock alumni, are not nearly as balanced as those of the state at large. I think they would rally around their mascot and resent any attempts to change it.

They have the right idea by filling up the negative space inside the C, but the gamecock logo doesn't belong in that space.
I made this attempt at cleaning up their logo. I feel like it instantly screams South Carolina

Worse
We are moving towards smaller lineups and that means we are not doing hard hedges as often (we seemed to be holding our own on the defensive glass this year though). Instead we are often switching screens 1-4.

I do not disagree with the need to evolve towards smaller lineups, but we have not yet figured out how to defend with them as well. We had to outscore UNC-W because we could not put out a lineup that could stop them.

The only thing that could possibly take TB is the NBA, and the narrative of our 'style' is diminishing those chances as well. There's no reason to worry so much, just enjoy the fact we have as many top tier coaches as we do.

Better than 16-17 would be awesome
My thought process with the 15-16 comparison is that it had a ton of young players in the rotation and it took a while to come together defensively. The 2016 guys are all higher rated recruits than past players, so they could learn the system faster, but I worry about missed assignments with such a young team. Whatever your opinion on Shayok's D, the option of a Thompson-Hall-Shayok-Wilkins-Salt lineup (off the bench) would have been the stuff of nightmares. We're such a team oriented defense that lots of veterans are naturally going to be better than a stud surrounded by weak links. Hall, Wilkins and Salt (and probably Mamadi) are obviously going to be great. That being said, we managed to have a good defense this year despite frequently resorting to a four guard lineup and increasingly relying on freshmen. I think we will be better than the 2016 team, but I'm not sure how we will stack up against this year or the 30 win seasons. Our defense was buoyed by veterans until the very end of the season when the freshmen started to take over. UNC is an obvious counterpoint, but that is the most defensive effort I've seen us give under Bennett. Guy getting 6 rebounds against the best rebounding team in the nation speaks for itself. Hunter and Marco will no doubt become great defenders eventually, but that's a tough ask for freshmen. I think we will see inconsistent defense, especially home and away (as is characteristic of young teams).

It is unfortunate for them.
Most unfortunate is their own failure to effectively market themselves. They should have changed the mascot years ago. Keep the Gamecock name like we're the Hoos, but market something else. Knowing they've lost the Carolina name in national recognition, pump SOUTH Carolina, SC.

It'll be interesting to see if Hunter can guard tall SFs
I thought the tall, athletic SFs that could shoot (Tatum, Bacon, etc) really gave us trouble this year since we lacked that type of player to guard them. Hunter has a lot of potential to help lock those guys down and keep them from going off on us.

I think teams will try to pick on Guy's defense, but I agree that overall we could be better next year on D, especially if it clicks next year for Diakite. He and Wilkins could have a block party every night.

The other thing I will say -- the love/hate Virginia and UVa
This was evident in many ways, too many to number. But my impression was that SC has great respect for Virginia, overall, along with a competitive disdain that must date back a couple of hundred years. It's unlike NC's relationship to either VA and SC; they (NC) think of themselves as a valley of humility between two mountains of conceit.

The video did not have a view of the runner. I don't think it
was a double steal. I think it was an attempt by the runners to take second and third on a passed ball/wild pitch. Caleb Knight made a great play to keep the ball out front and throw out the runner. Had the ball gotten further from the catcher, VCU would have had runners on second and third and could have tied the game on a single. Under the circumstances, I can't fault VCU. Knight made the play needed to end the game.
