The same could be said about boxing
Boxing was once the second most popular sport in America (after baseball). Now it is a niche sport at best. Middle and upper class kids do not play it. More and more parents will not let their kids play a sport that has such a high potential for a serious injury. While football has much farther to fall then boxing ever did, it is not too big to fail.

Just curious -- how many parents on this board will not allow their kids to play football in rec leagues, middle school, or high school?

I think they could get better by adding worse players
They desperately need wing defenders capable of slowing down GS and allowing Lebron to save some energy for offense. The beauty of Lebron is there are like a million ways to construct a good team around him. I think trading Kyrie for less offensively talented shooters that can also defend could end up in a more successful fight against GS... the problem is Cle has to plan for more than just next year

Why would an elite athlete at an elite meet spend energy on that?
Perhaps these were the last events so it didn't matter? Otherwise, if you're parceling out your racing swims and managing your program, I don't see why you'd want to waste energy on such a "made for TV" meaningless event. Save you stuff for individual events and the relays that count.

Re: I never understood that narrative about LeBron
When has he ever made a signature shot? All the greats have. He also seldom makes shots to stop momentum and keep the score close when his team is trailing. He shies away from those moments. He doesn't get to the line in the clutch either. For as much as he gets credit for controlling everything he doesn't control the 4th quarter. That's been proven time after time.

He hasn't been anywhere close to awful IMHO; yes, he's walked a few guys,
usually leadoff hitters, which is odd for him and won't continue. His first save was a bit shaky but he got it done, and last night was one of those weird games that closers often struggle with, come in with such a big lead (no save) that they're just thinking throw strikes and get this thing over with, just not the same level of adrenaline and focus. I just don't think you can hold that against him. I wasn't watching but I guess Dusty got him up when the Nats took the lead, and then when they kept scoring he sent him out there since he was already hot.

If there were any sure thing closers available, like Melancon last year, then maybe you consider adding them to Doc and Madson to pitch the 9th, but I don't think that guy exists (even David Robertson fell a little short, I think, but you could argue the case). They may need to devote whatever resources they have to make a trade to getting another starter, though it looks like Roark has gotten it together after a really bad stretch.

Late August according to the ticket website
If the football schedule can come out seven months in advance, basketball's shouldn't be 2-3 months before the opener.

I know that football games/weekends involve more people and more planning on both the fans' and the school's end. But people plan weekends, and in some cases their entire winter, around basketball.

Kobe and Shaq always had issues. But when Shaq and Kobe ...
both have their ultimatums to the Lakers, one of them had to go. Kyrie and LeBron also had their issues. Now one of them issued an ultimatum. They can be forced to be teammates ... but it will be awkward.

Note: Kyrie's agent NEVER denied that he doesn't want to play with LeBron. It wasn't just, "I want to leave Cleveland." LeBron is a sensitive guy. I'm assuming that hurt him. It probably embarrassed him too. And as we all know, LeBron doesn't like being embarrassed.

Kyrie is angry and that is certain. I don't know WHEN he wanted ...
out of Cleveland, but NBA rumors suggest it was before the draft. LeBron and Kyrie always had issues but it seemed to have boiled over when Jimmy Butler unexpectedly said he didn't want to go to the Cavs 3 days before the draft. This was after telling people he'd play in Cleveland a couple of days before. Remember, Butler is great friends with Kyrie. They want to play together. Someone tipped Jimmy off.

Cleveland's roster already has 2 Klutch Sports players, JR Smith and Tristan Thompson. I believe the rumors that Eric Bledsoe (Klutch Sports) was on his way too until Dan Gilbert squashed the trade. It would have enabled George to come to the Cavs too IF Kyrie was dealt. People still say Bledsoe + Jackson (BJ Armstrong client who also has DRose) for Kyrie is a possibility. The Pacers were not interested in Gary Harris ... in which Love would have went to Denver and George to the Cavs.

Now you hear Bledsoe is working out with LeBron in Vegas with DRose. There is no doubt that LeBron is leaking it to purposely anger Kyrie. Kyrie was not happy that his name was floated as trade bait. His camp is convinced it was Klutch Sports who pushed Griffin on the idea for Bledsoe and the 4th pick. The divide between Kyrie and LeBron is bad. It's just as awkward as the Kobe / Shaq riff. It's going to take an actual meeting between the two to work it out.

As board continues to wring its collective hands re no '18 commit ...
I continue to put forth some Rationale 101:

(a) The number of scholarships we have available does nothing to create a sense of urgency among our targets.
(b) Unlike the last time we had this situation, we have no Ty Jeromes or Kyle Guys who were dead set on becoming Wahoos.
(c) None of our top targets have seen a spot in their #1 choice for a program disappear, which would require them to move to a secondary choice.

These factors, IMHO, continue to explain why we haven't had a commit for the '18 class. Unless something happens to change the dynamics of said variables, we very well might be waiting until the early signing period in November before gaining that recruit.

Doesn't mean we'll necessarily be disappointed. Just means our patience will be tested.

One thing is emphatically true: We need a true PG in this class because Ty is the only other #1 on our roster come the '18-'19 season.

If I was Cleveland I wouldn't trade Kyrie
There is just no way they get better with trading him. No one who wants Kyrie is going to want to give away someone who is as good or better.

I actually think he's a pretty good fit with LeBron. He isn't a very good distributor for a PG and LeBron makes up for that. That team is also designed to spread the floor so he can use his incredible handle and finishing ability to the optimal extent. I haven't looked up his synergy info but from a peripheral standpoint he fits well with what LeBron was trying to build there. They won a championship with this team.

I'm sure he wants to leave but I can't imagine that him staying would hurt their chances of winning any more than trading him for a worse player would do.

As a teen I lived in both the Detroit and Cleveland areas
I prefer Cleveland. It was actually a rather nice city aside from the weather. I Iived in the snowbelt east of the city and while a kid snow is great (school is closed, you get to play in it), as an adult not so much (I've got to drive to work in this?)

But I vastly prefer the South to either of the above, and to any place else up North (including DC area/NOVA where I also lived as a child, and spent a lot of time there while at UVa)

15th best point guard would be a great outcome for Malc
Guys like Bledsoe, Dragic, and Teague are in that 10-15 range. It'd be great if brogdon was as valuable as those guys. Still, I don't like this trade for the bucks. Irving's defense and poor passing makes him a bottom-of-the-top-10 point guard (if that, some rankings put him out of the top 10), despite prodigious scoring abilities. A healthy Kris Middleton alone is more valuable than Irving. It'd be interesting to watch next year if this happened. The Cavs could be way better against the warriors with Middleton. They could defend Durant with KM, put Lebron on Draymond, allowing lebron to essentially play center field. This is the exact same strategy that won the cavs the 2016 finals, and the warriors employed the same strategy to win last year. The NBA is a game of how many very good two way players you have and Kris Middleton is a great one to get.
