Bernardino (and Danowski)

Mark thought he was untouchable - with pretty good reason by virtue of performance - but he also had a serious cultural issue not unlike Starsia's (favoritism) developing in his teams, largely surrounding one of his assistants. The issue made it to the AD's office - breaking the Dino code - from more than one swimmer's family - and it landed in Oliver's lap - and the animus you alluded to played right into Oliver's hands. He demanded Dino fire the assistant - Dino resisted (although the assistant eventually left/was pushed out). To spite Oliver and the Administration he resigned at the worst possible time for recruiting and basically killed the program for 4 years on the men's side. Dino, like Dom, had a hand in his own demise - the assistant was good but had baggage prior to UVA and Dino did not want to be told what to do (even though I believe he knew he needed to do something). There were also hazing issues that played out soon thereafter - as the culture in swimming was changing but UVA was not under Dino.

Both Dom and Dino were unable/unwilling to adapt the cultures of their programs to the new realities (not that the new realities were fair in all instances) and change was made.

The Danowski thing is a little different - his program was operating on all cylinders when he made the hire (and his son was one of the best to play the college game). We had a real need at the defensive assistant at the time and Joe, unfortunately, didn't have the pedigree as a player or a coach, particularly at a time when we were declining.
