I'm Not So Sure That's the Case Anymore

My understanding is that Lars and he are in regular contact; with Littlepage and Oliver soon gone, I suspect he will be welcomed back in a an appropriate way.

Dom, unfortunately, was the master of his own demise. As die from the on-field performance issues, he had lost some of his prowess in recruiting - whether that was effort or complacency I am not sure - and there were cultural issues that were materializing (favoritism being one alleged issue, player accountability being another) that hurt his effectiveness. I do believe that nepotism was a significant issue (maybe the most significant issue) as well - all of these conspired to hurt Dom's credibility and leadership at a time when it was most needed.

I don't know the details of how it all ended (whether he wanted to protect Joe or not and what else he might have asked for in the end) but change was needed, with or without a swan song year. I am not surprised that he didn't necessarily see it that way (most people in his position don't) but the administration was in a very difficult position with all of these problems in place. And, their playbook for these situations was evident for all to see - how they dealt with Mark Bernardino (cultural issues in the program) and Debbie Ryan (great legacy, recent mediocre performance).

Everyone would have preferred a more graceful departure, and most probably would have been comfortable with a swan song year but another year of poor performance with the cultural issues continuing to fester probably wasn't acceptable to the administration.
