Parenting is a constant tradeoff between short-term and long-term interests
It will often be much quicker and easier to, say,
Pick up a toy or spilled food yourself rather than have your kid do it.
Tie a kid's shoe yourself rather than teach the kid to tie a shoe.
Finish the "half assed" chore (as RM says above) yourself instead of calling the kid back and explaining what still needs to be done.
As you can expect, it is almost always better to invest the time now in order to make life easier in the long run. It will pay off. Do not develop a habit of finding the quickest way to peace and quiet. I don't think parenting is hard, but it is hard work.
But sometimes you really do need some peace and quiet and it won't kill you or the kid to sit the kid down in front of the TV for a while so you can get stuff done.
