Were they ever a fashion item?


Granted, I was 1 in 1984, so maybe it was hot in the prep scene or something.

But my growing up my grandparents always had a pair. I didn't realize they were a fashion item. Although I've seen them worn more frequently out and about. I'll wear mine out and about if it's snowing or I know I'll be out for extended periods in wet weather. But they are still function over form for me. They aren't the most comfortable either with the foot cushioning, but they work if you need to have them on all day.
