A Few Baby Lessons Learned from Father of 4:

1) Get the baby out of your room ASAP; you will NEVER sleep well with him/her in there -- every small noise or movement in the crib will send you jolting out of your light sleep. If you're not rested as best you can be, the rest gets much worse. We learned this with #1, and for #s 2-4, we sent the child to the end of the hall, to the "baby room". That way, we didn't hear the small noises, but you will most *definitely* hear when the baby wakes up for real and is hungry.

2) Related to this: it is Ok to let a baby cry. Related to the "Tough Love" theory, I hear stories of parents all the time who sat outside their child's room, upset and crying, because the baby was crying. I don't understand that. You will quickly learn what is a legitimate "cry", indicating something wrong or a really hungry babe -- don't cave to the manipulative cry.

3) As the husband, do NOT sleep in the hospital while your wife is there -- you need every last bit of good sleep you can get, and those chairs & faux beds are awful.

4) Related to (3) (and even (1)), have the baby sleep in the nursery at the hospital -- your wife will need the best sleep she can get for that last day or two, and the nurses will help get the baby to her for feeding, when needed.

5) Take every photo and video of the young years you possibly can, because you will NEVER believe how quickly it passes and he/she is off to college.

6) If a Virginia resident, buy the pre-paid tuition NOW. I can't tell you how happy I am to have tuition paid for already for my 4 kids -- the cost for all 4 of them is about what the cost would've been for one.

I'm sure I could think of others, but it's been 14 years since I was in your position....

Good luck and enjoy!
