Re: I dont want to make it sound worse than it is

Longtime lurker and love what majority post (epsically ZHoo). ZHoo is 100% right, WBB is a major counter balance to football spending for Title IX.

Just a few things to throw it for the post glory WBB era:

-First, there is no doubt WBB budget was high. When you examine the op ex budget of the team at the time, it was amongst highest in ACC (Carolina and the Frese Maryland teams as top two). However, that is now the standard for top 25 teams to travel charter for the vast majority of road games. In the ACC, the only WBB teams who do not charter consistently are Georgia Tech & Boston College (with Miami having recently invested in greater charter aircraft travel)

- The team did fly to most road games outside of a 3 hour drive (and a few crazy airplane issues). In the ACC, that meant everyone but VT & Maryland. The triangle teams were driven when games happened during exam period.

-There are many things to criticize Debbie for. However, fighting for and using the budget given to was not one (with one important caveat). Anyone who has run a successful business with multiple divisions knows each department head will fight for their maximum budget and it is the head (in this case AD) responsibility to manage. Debbie's fighting led WBB to be one of first teams to give female athletes sports bras for instance.

-Now for that caveat: Debbie misunderstood the public perception of continuing to fund the team at such a high level while on court results decreased. Diminishing returns plus an increasing insular staff that distanced/angered fans led to the eventual outcome.

-As to budget now, one of the best sites for this information is wbbstate.com (think KenPom for WBB). They recently removed budget information for WBB but it is safe to say that UVA WBB is continuing to spend a healthy amount on the sport but has reprioritized spending (look at increased staff size). Hopefully this leads to the return to glory days for the young women on the team and staff
