I see in the latest rankings that we’re #207. With 12 scholarships to the

Freaking University of Virginia at our disposal and we can’t manage to be in the top 200. How does that happen?

It’s sports like this where we should be consistently strong and occasionally thrive. The young women that play have to realize very few people make a living playing volleyball and that D1 NCAA is the end of the road. This is where the value of a scholarship to UVA should stand out against all but a few (certainly fewer than 200) other schools that also field a team.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the only non-football sport that has trended downward in the last few years.

You’re also right that the ACC is considerably weaker than other major conferences despite every member school fielding a team. Some of that is going to be due to a lack of a winning tradition that has to be a recruiting turn-off. But, I have to think the sustained lack of success is simply due to the sport not being a priority. The top 4 teams are Penn St, Minnesota, Kentucky and Nebraska—none of which I imagine are squarely located in recruiting hotbeds. The ACC should be better and I’d think it would be if it were considered important.
