We have a good team with the potential to be very good. Since I have little knowledge of the rest of the ACC, it would be foolish of me to comment on our success against them. But I do feel confident we will make the NCAA tourney. Unfortunately I felt the same way after the first few games last year.
Improvements includes a more disciplined approach (fewer turnovers), better goaltending, better ssdm play, and less difficulty adapting to change. Significant positives are the first middie line, dividends (hopefully) from a more aggressive approach to defense, one year of experience in Lars' system, and an even more competitive attitude than last year’s group, as evidenced by their play in intra-squad scrimmages and competitive drills.
Serious concerns would be at the FO X. This could be our achilles heel. The wings better be very good. A less obvious worry is that we are very young. Of my 14 projected starters, 8 are first years or second years. Only 3 are fourth years. There is also the ongoing need to improve the fundamentals; a point Lars’ stresses.
According to IL, Lars wants to make sure he does not run guys into the ground and thereby avoid fatigue in anticipation of the rough end of season schedule.
Lars, Kip and Sean understand our weaknesses (at least those perceived by us) and are focused on fixing them. We have an excellent group of coaches, which should give us a lot of confidence in the future.
