Re: I do have an opinion, but it is just speculation as no one really knows.

LC was a JTCC kid who went to Boca -- then blew out his elbow needing TJ surgery. MF stayed at JTCC. So did Kudla and Ore. Tiafoe went to Boca later, but not full time until much later. Not sure where Sock trained beyond Overland Park/Leawood, KS. But he played HS tennis, a truly unusual use of his time.

Picking winners and losers at that age is difficult. Talent, desire, determination must be guesstimated against potential physical stature and the state of play. MF didn't have the style of play the USTA liked and wasn't as favored as JS. Kudla went pro but hasn't broken through the top 50. Ore didn't seem to ever make a run, not sure if he was injured. Is LC competing? JS was the one of that group to make a statement, with Frances banging on the door. Domijan, on the other hand, had the size and played some Kastles events but chose a different path. Not sure what his relationship was with the USTA.

It is true that USTA started looking for athletes that they could train to be tennis players a few years back. In the end it'll be the stars aligned combination of talent, access to excellent training, determination and practice that produces the next big player. Maybe that is Frances, or Tommy Paul, or some other. Or maybe that player is already training in Spain -- like the Murray boys did. . ..
