Pay-to-play is just as big of an issue

We're essentially closing off elite level soccer development from everyone but wealthy suburbanites. Not only does that keep the system off-limits to the immigrant populations that could really help, but just from a sheer numbers perspective, we're likely keeping some of the best players out.

The dirty little secret there is that the people most invested in the system don't want it to change. (This is not unique to soccer - it plagues baseball, too, and lacrosse.) The money they spend in a limited talent pool gives their kids a big competitive advantage.

U.S. Soccer is in the position of pitching a development program that, if it works, will severely impede the chances of almost every kid currently involved in the program. That's a tough, tough sell.
