Best times outside of best events swum recently don't mean much


You need to know when he last swam the event, was he tapered when he swam it.
Witness Leah Smith's 400 IM - based on her best time, no one would have predicted she would be the top US 400 IM swimmer this past summer, but she simply had not done the event recently. In his case, per collegeswimming.com, he swam that time in early November, 2015 - almost 2 years ago as a HS sophomore - early season. His 200 Im this past spring was 1:53, so I'd bet he could do a 200 free quite a bit faster now.
