Agree that weak-side shot blocking could add a dimension


I look at it more as a wrinkle to the help defense rather than a point of emphasis for the coaches. Diakite erases his own positioning errors and the mistakes of others with his long strides and length (similar to how Justin Anderson would erase shots from behind of players that dribbled past him).

But I still think defensive rebounding is the prime directive for this coaching staff (right or wrong), and going for weak-side blocking means your man gets a free path to the boards. You better not miss or time it such that the guard can dump it inside for an easy dunk or layup.

Because of his skill set and length, we should be encouraging Diakite to keep going for blocks because that is something he can do better than almost anyone in the ACC. It is part of how he can best help the team. But he is not rebounding the way we normally expect from his position, and rebounding is more about positioning, technique and anticipation than athleticism. Being a good shot-blocker and a good rebounder is a hard thing.
