Think of it as a constraint on how a kid can advertise his situation. They also use the term, "committed to the admission process." It is all goofiness, given that no one has any guarantee until he is admitted at an Ivy, or for that matter, any other school.

Lars, I have heard, is sincerely focused on academics and there may be (or have been) situations where he may say no thanks to a commit who does not meet the standards he is setting in the classroom, which are higher than what was required in the past.
