Johnson's father passed away suddenly in May

been pretty widely talked about, and his results since, not surprisingly, haven't been great.

Not sure if your comments were referring to his play over the last year or so, or more recently. There is definitely a reason his play in the last 3-4 months has not been great and I'm pretty sure Clark's comments were specifically about his summer since his father's death.

Before that in 2017 he hadn't had a ton of great results, but he won the US Clay Court Championships, and in his other tournaments, many of them ended with losses to top players. He has lost to Sock (x2), Wawrinka, Cilic, Federer, Thiem, to name a few, in some of his 2017 tourney's.

So before his father passed, his year was OK considering he was getting to where he should before facing top players much of the time.
