The idyllic and summertime-sleepy town of Charlottesville was invaded by hate
this past weekend. Our men’s lacrosse program was fortunate to not
experience first-hand the racism and bigotry… this time. But obviously
others and other UVa varsity teams were exposed to the hate and violence. If
there is a next time, we will have to be prepared to ensure everyone’s
safety. We recognize such vile thoughts and actions, though limited to only a
small portion of our population, do exist in our nation and in our commonwealth
of Virginia. My staff and I will meet with our team on Friday for the annual
Move-In Day barbecue to embrace each other in our reunion, share a meal and to
discuss how to best confront both protected and unprotected speech and behavior
that is counter to our values and principles, both individually and as a team.

Classes commence Tuesday, August 22nd. Can we start the academic year with a
proverbial punch and be more successful in the classroom? Can we achieve a
team GPA above a 3.0 in the Fall term, as we did this past Spring term? We
will be on the lower practice field for our first day of training Friday the
25th. Once again, we will hold tryouts. A dozen men are attempting to earn a
spot on our roster as walk-ons and the returning men know there is nothing
guaranteed them. Expect Nothing, Earn Everything is the mantra!

Before listing the upcoming events, let me backtrack to an emotionally powerful
Saturday in July up in Hingham, MA. Tucker Radebaugh ‘99, Michael Leahy
’99 and retired Navy SEAL John Fussell hosted the 2nd annual All In, All The
Time Foundation lacrosse clinic. Greg Traynor ’95, Ryan Curtis ’00, Bruce
Townsend ’00 and Mike Culver ’06 were there as well, coaching and assisting
with logistics. In addition, there were great financial contributions from the
VLAN network. Intermixed with 8 lacrosse-skill stations over two hours, the
100 boys were exposed to messages of teamwork, humility and love. The All In,
All The Time Foundation responds to the needs of families of Navy Special
Warfare and Special Operations warriors, for both the fallen and the active /
retired. An inspiring day for all of us who were there, I will not forget this
day nor meeting the wife of a recently killed Navy SEAL. The following is an
insightful 3-minute video:

Moving forward, we are preparing for a Thursday, September 7th VAF event in
Baltimore. I hope you can join Julie Myers ’90 and myself at the Elkridge
Club. We will both provide our messages and the vision we share for our
programs. The invitation can be found here:

The Wakely Flyers are preparing for their annual endeavor in the National MS
Society’s “City to Shore Bike Ride” on Saturday, September 23rd. Who are
the Wakely Flyers? They are a team comprised of UVA Lacrosse alumni and friends
whom are directly connected to Chris Wakely (’90). Chris, the former head
lacrosse coach of Lehigh University, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in
2002. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been raised by this group since
2008 for research in finding a cure for MS. The ride starts in Cherry Hill NJ
(just outside Philadelphia), and finishes in Ocean City NJ. It is an 80 mile
ride – the Flyers have a lot of laughs as a team as they bike together to
Ocean City in support of “Wakes” and his family. The scenery is beautiful,
and it is a great ride that is very rewarding in many ways.

At the bottom of this email is information on the ride providing links for
registration, game day logistics, and fundraising. Team leaders (and former UVA
lax players) Tom Burt (tburt90@gmail.com ), Nick Gannon (njg24@drexel.edu ),
and John Begier (jbegier@comcast.net ) can help you with anything you need to
get organized for this event.

As a reminder, Doug Knight ’97 will be inducted into the US National Lacrosse
Hall of Fame Saturday, September 23rd at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, MD.
Is Doug’s induction, due in large part to his fantastically creative scoring
style that included diving around the crease, the reason behind recent serious
consideration by NCAA lacrosse administrators for bringing back “The Dive”?
He has certainly inspired others in the past and made a profound impact on the
game of lacrosse. I hope you can join us as his legacy is honored.

On Thursday, September 28th, Harlem Lacrosse will host its annual New York City
benefit. This year the event will be held at The Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers
(Pier 61). Dom Starsia continues to be a strong proponent and supporter of
this unique program, spearheading both the educational and coaching
contributions for HL. This event has quickly become one of the biggest and
most rewarding yearly events in all of the lacrosse world. To purchase
