may to the extent that it makes the safe choice one of hiring one of the assistants - that's a choice can can fly and then in 2-3 years if things don't work out be changed as it probably would not involve the type longer term contract, moving expense, placement fees, that a totally new hire would entail. I don't really know how the assistants are viewed among the swimmers, but unless there is discontent or a reason not to, making an offer to the perceived "best" one seems a low risk minimal cost option. Chitwood would seem to have the best resume as he has two swimmers going to worlds - AD logically might wait till he returns for an interview (and get view of Leah Smith, the latest face of the program swimmer).
