As a former 4 year swimmer (under Dino)

I am not sure how I feel about this. I never met or talked to Angie, and was not one of the alumni who were outspoken when Dino left. I liked him, but he was not who I trained under. I did have experience with Chip as my coach and can say that I was not shocked one bit to hear he was the reason or catalyst to this whole chain of events.... with that said.... Yes, the men's team was hurting... a lot.... but this past year with Clark and Whiteside and the rest of the freshman showed real promise. If that continued, we would be right back at the top, or competing for 1st or 2nd at ACCs in at least 4-5 years. We weren't getting top flight recruits but that would surely change with a few more classes performing like this years first year class.

It would have been better to have this notice around say the end of march...as recruiting will probably hurt this year as a result. I see 2 ways to avoid it hurting too much... 1) hire from within and whoever was in charge or recruiting or #2) hire someone with experience and ties with international recruiting.

With regard to a new coach, my first thought was Bill Smyth. He left early enough to not be part of the whole situation that went down like Doak (and I think Doak would be good, and liked him, but he was too close to what went down even if he had nothing to do with it, plus Duke doubled down on keeping him). Smyth would surely be very popular with alum, and in my experience was the most knowledgeable, versatile, dedicated, controlled passionate coach I had there and I swam under him in the summers. Plus, with his history of training almost every great UVA distance swimmer, I would think he could possibly keep Leah in cville which would really help recruiting.

My second thought was Jake Shrum and I can't believe I have not heard his name mentioned at all anywhere!! What he has done at Towson is great stuff. When he stepped up (and succeeded) to be interim head coach and then full time head coach under the circumstances he did, that shows me he can handle anything. Plus his passion for UVA and swimming is unmatched.

Sure a Sergio would be great, but really unrealistic I think. Then again, I would have said Marsh in San Diego was too...

My final thought is a bit of a rant, and that is about the talk of hiring Yuri or a "tarbaby" as a UVA coach. If you think letting Dino go upset the alumni base, wait until you see what they do if someone from chapstick hill becomes our coach. The rise of the UVA swim team was driven by the hatred of anything and everything baby blue. For the longest time the team would never stay or eat in chapstick hill because we didn't want to support any business or give any tax money to that hell hole of a town. Hiring yuri would result in less alum support than Augie had and would be directly related to who he is as a babyblue blood and not because he is replacing a legend.

Bill or Jake for coach!!
