Score differential is NOT goals/game

If someone is going to gripe about offensive performance, back it up with offensive stats, not blended stats like score differential.

Look at offensive stats and you see:
Avg goals/game 10.6 to 14.64 (middle of the pack to top 5 in D1)
Assists/game: 5.3 to 9.4 (middle of the pack to top 3 in D1)
Assisted goal rate: 50% to 64%

From 2016 to 2017, Hoos went from a mediocre offense to one of the best in D1.

Goal differential is a blended measure of team performance, and that went up from 0.27 to 1.6, so the improvement on offense wasn't matched by the improvement on defense. However, if you look at the goal differential vs top opponents on the schedule, that improved from -4.3 to -2.1 goals/game. Regardless of the disappointing losses to UNC and Duke, Hoos were better vs their toughest opponents this year than last year, when they got thrashed by Loyola, Duke, UNC, and Brown. In goal, performance by starting keeper improved - 48 to 51%, while playing a riskier, more difficult defense. Clearing improved 86 to 89% while going from very conservative to aggressive.

In summary, Hoos were much better on offense, but remained sub-par on defense. They might have slightly improved on defense, but not enough to move the needle and to win the big games they needed to.
