In 2002, I could read the same comments you offered about UVA

men's basketball. Heck, baseball was a heartbeat from being de-emphasized as a fully-funded varsity sport. A top former tennis pro walked away from our men's team. Complaints were rolling in about why Dom/men's lax had not won since '99. And GG/men's soccer were completely trashed for simply not getting to the final four.

Not sure why it is so difficult to see that UVA has only two winning seasons in the past decade for football and it is going to take quite sometime to recover from the damage.

There is NO mass conspiracy that anyone in the administration wanted to deflate the football program. Groh made countless mistakes in managing the program, on and off the field. London was simply over his head. Those two tenures brought us to where we are today. There was some things that happened behind the curtain that impacts at all schools. Some bad decisions were made within both coaching staffs, as well as the administration. But to suggest the football program is essentially being sabotaged by the administration is simply a misguided and uninformed viewpoint.

For those who want to give the UVA football program a big step up, please offer to donate 50%/give them a pathway to build a football-only facility for $60MM-$70MM to put them on par with Clemson, FSU, etc. In hindsight, UVA should have told Carl Smith the school only wanted to go to 52K in attendance at Scott and place the remaining funds in reserve for a football-only facility, and then most of the other sports could move out of U-Hall into McCue.

UVA's problem with football is that those alums from the '50s, '60s, '70s, and early '80s carried it during the bad years and allowed those from the mid-to-late '80s, '90s, and early '00s to ride the coattails of winning. Many from the early years have passed on, or still pissed from being unceremoniously dismissed by reseating in '07, and the entitled classes during/post-Welsh were only used to winning couldn't take a losing era.

It's going to take another lengthy period of redevelopment to get the program back. Football has never been a flip of the switch type of recovery sport at UVA. As I've said many times, if you don't like seeing the sausage being made, turn away until it is to your liking.

I'm not sure Mendenhall is the answer, but he certainly deserves better than some of these ridiculous posts that appear on this board after one year. If he doesn't work out, you'll have a new AD and President to blame for the next hire!!!

As I told my younger siblings/kids after the past election, it's your world now, let's see what you can do with it!!!
