Oh, good lord, this again.....

The revisionist history on Groh's 3-4 is ridiculous.

Yes, at times the defense was gashed -- and badly. Sometimes it was the 2-gap nose getting pushed back so far our linebackers couldn't get the initial hit on a back until he was already 6 yards downfield. Sometimes we were burned to the outside because of the lack of lateral speed from our outside backers. But most of the time, it was a damned stout defense and they played their reads very well.

What matters, of course, is keeping the other team from scoring, whether or not a team is playing so-called "bend, not break" defense.

Groh's nine years, scoring defense rank:

2001 -- 74th of 117
2002 -- 50th of 117
2003 -- 26th of 117
2004 -- 18th of 120
2005 -- 40th of 119
2006 -- 22nd of 119
2007 -- 16th of 120
2008 -- 38th of 120
2009 -- 68 of 120
Average -- 39th

Now let's look at London's vaunted 4-3 (with Tenuta!!!) for which this board long had clamored, and Welsh's 4-3 from his last nine years (1992-2000, which gave him a decade to establish a defensive scheme and recruit for it, something that Groh did not have in the nine years listed above):

London
2010 -- 70th of 120
2011 -- 46th of 120
2012 -- 71st of 124
2013 -- 99th of 125
2014 -- 33rd of 128
2015 -- 96th of 128
Average -- 69th

Welsh
1992 -- 44th of 107
1993 -- 24th of 106
1994 -- 13th of 107
1995 -- 36th of 108
1996 -- 13th of 111
1997 -- 43rd of 112
1998 -- 28th of 112
1999 -- 94th of 114
2000 -- 56th of 116
Average -- 39th

As for actual points allowed per game, Groh's nine years were 22.2, London's six were 28.4 and Welsh's last nine were 21.1.

Groh's best was 17.7 in 2004 and his worst was in his first year (27.6 in 2001).

London's best was 23.8 in 2011, and his worst was two years later at 33.3 in 2013.

Welsh's best over that stretch was probably our best ever in terms of talent that ended up in the NFL (Barber, Ellsworth, Harris, Sharper, Farrior, etc.): 1994, at 16.3 per game. His worst over that time was 30.4 in 1999.
