Best flea/antique markets

The best is the Bermondsey Square Antique Market in Southwark on Friday morning. Finding the place is tricky so it is best to take a cab. It starts before daylight and is over by noon. This is where London dealers go to get new acquisitions. It started a century ago as a fencing area for stolen goods. Best deals are found at sunrise. What you see here will be offered for 3x more on Portobello Road the next day. Plan about an hour as the market is small.

That said, the Portobello Road Market is a great experience and covers several city blocks. There are nearby underground stops and it is easy to find. Plan about 3 hours. There are a wide variety of goods. My favorites are stores that feature old Wedgewood jasperware and stores that offer bargain antique clocks. You will find everything from Egyptian artifacts to vintage costume jewelry. While many of the antique stores are open every day, the best day is Saturday. Arrive by 9 AM to avoid almost unbearable crowds in the afternoon. Then go to a museum in the afternoon.
