I mean it doesn't mean a whole lot in the scope of building and running a successful (and winning) program. Does it help? Sure. But you can win without the top ranked players. You can put a bunch of well coached and well developed 3-star athletes up against the best teams in the country and compete. It just takes a little longer to tap into their potential.
Sure the top teams generally have the best recruits, so it makes it easier for them to win and rebuild. Generally a top 10 school loaded with 4 and 5 star recruits can simply line up against most FBS opponents and win. To win championships, that's where the coaching comes into play.
The difference is we're not trying to be Elite, so we don't need to rely on Elite talent to get there.
