IMO, at the end of the day, a lot of it comes down to how guys are coached

If you take a 5* recruit and put him with Bobby Bowden or Nick Saban, chances are they're going to excel in a major way. If you take a 3* kid and put him with Bowden or Saban, they're likely going to succeed. Is their ceiling as high as a 5*? Rarely, but often it happens. Lamar Jackson comes to mind as a 3* who is outperforming basically every 5* at his position.

In a lot of sports, the very best high school guys are rarely better than college-level starters who have multiple years in a system. For instance, there isn't a 5* LB in high school right now who would come in and supplant Micah Kiser (who was a 3* out of high school). I saw it first hand in wrestling when multi-year All Americans and National Champions would go to major programs, and wouldn't see the mat as a starter for at least two years. It's not that they're "not good", it's that guys who have multiple years in a college level program are simply better at the sport than high school guys.

Going further, if you take a 5* recruit and put him with a bad coach, there's a decent chance not going to excel far beyond his high school accolades. I'm sure you can already think of a few examples of these types of guys. Now you mix in 3* guys with bad coaches, and that's when you get into discussions about coaching changes. London was given a long leash so long as he was bringing in 4 and 5* guys. Once recruiting dropped off, he was done.

For the here and now, the question with CBM is can he take 3* guys he believes fits his system, and coach a sizable number of them up to a high performing level? I suspect this question will get many mixed reviews on this board, but it's the scenario any coach would have found himself in with this program.
