The toughest thing I ever had to do as a trauma surgeon, by far, was to


a family that their child had not survived his/her injuries. The only people who felt worse than me was the family. I asked a lot of other trauma surgeons how they handled that situation and their response was always universally the same: "Badly." Thus, I make sure I hug my two sons every day when they go off to school, just in case they don't make it back.
