It is interesting to note, however,

that SwimSwan recently did an analysis of the top recruits from 4 years ago (this year's graduating seniors). The male swimmer who scored the 2nd most points at the NCAA meet over 4 years was Will Licon, who was not rated a top 10 recruit out of HS, likewise for Clark Smith (didn't even make Texas NCAA squad his freshman year) won 2 events and set two American records his senior year.
Leah Smith also was not top 10 (but did rate an honorable mention), yet she turned out to score more NCAA points over her career that anyone else in her class.
There are plenty of diamonds in the rough out there.
