I agree with the timing but not the root cause

Yes - our program went into a decline when other schools started investing, but I don't fully agree with you about why that caused the slip.

My opinion - Debbie Ryan used to win games because we had the best players on the floor. As far as actual coaching acumen, I think she was average to above average, but she was able to bring in players because we invested in the program and others didn't. That led to repeated sellout crowds in U-Hall in the 1990-1996 timeframe.

Don't forget Debbie Ryan's first six seasons were 6th, 6th, 6th, 4th, 5th, and 6th in the conference. 17-31 ACC record during that span.

After that - it was 1st, 3rd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 4th, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st, 2nd. Pretty impressive run by any measure. But then we stopped getting the best talent because others stepped up their recruiting.

If you look at the "down years" - the last 8 years of Coach Ryan's time here, our average place in conference was 6th. We averaged the middle of the pack. We had a couple 3rds, and a 9th in there. Our average record was 20.125 - 12.5. Again, average for a p5 team who has some cupcake OOC wins to build winning percentage.

When we stopped having the best talent, we became an average team, not a bad team. Because we had an average coach, not a bad coach. We just were used to being automatic for the sweet 16.

My point - it wasn't predetermined that we would stink simply because UConn, Duke, UNC, etc. invested. When they invested our talent became average and that, combined with an average X's and O's coach, led to average teams.

My corollary - if we get a good coach then we should move from being an average team to being a good team. Winning begets winning. Given the current first year class, a good coach would be able to win a bunch of games with the roster we have. If CJB can win games with this roster, then that could lead to improved recruiting and a positive spiral.

CJB's first 6 seasons aren't directionally that different from Coach Ryan's first 6. In season 7, Coach Ryan won an ACC regular season title. Let's see what CJB can do.
