Depth Chart Highlights and Concerns

With winter work outs winding down and spring ball getting ready to start, I started thinking about the team and the depth chart for next year. Anyone that knows me also knows that I always have a "we're going to win it all" approach in the off season, but I've stated on here before that I think we can win 7 games next year.

For today, I wanted to look at the strengths and weaknesses in the next years team:

Strengths:

Wide Receivers - This might be one of the best receiving groups, collectively, we've had in a while. SRs Andre Levrone and Doni Dowling, OZ and Eldridge are JRs, Dubois and Reed showed really well last year and we've got some good talent coming in and coming back from injury. I think this is the strongest part of the team.

Secondary - I think this group, which did well last year, takes a big step forward next year. With Quin Blanding coming back as well as seniors Tim Harris, and Kirk Garner, there is experience. Those guys, along with Juan Thornhill, Kareem Gibson, Darious Latimore, Myles Robinson and Chuck Davis should make for a very competitive secondary.

Linebacker - As much, if not more so, as the secondary, I think our linebackers are going to also take a big step forward. Kiser is back, Cook is back from injury, and a number of young guys got experience last year. Jordan Mack, CJ Stalker, Jahvoni Simmons, Dominic Shppard and Chris Peace will hopefully step up to become a very solid linebacking crew for us.

Weaknesses (or unknowns)

Defensive Line - Mainly, Defensive Tackle. As a drew it up, I could see a defensive like of Andrew Brown, Jack Powers and Eli Hanback, if Jack Powers can transition to DT. James Trucilla was the list DT back up last year, but we are really in need of some depth there, as well as proven depth at DE outside of Powers and Hanback Juwan Moye could step up, as could Steven Wright, but there is definitely some concern on the DL.

Running Back - It's been a while since this has been an issue for UVA, but with smoke and Reid's graduation and losing some depth due to transfer, the only returning running backs we have are Jordan Ellis and Daniel Hamm. Now both Ellis and Hamm are capable and we have some good prospects coming in (thankfully, two enrolled early) but this is the most unproven our backfield has been in a long, long time.

Kicking Punting - The good news is we have a highly ranked, scholarship kicker coming in to charlottesville. The bad news is that he's pretty much everything that is special teams for UVA. If there was anyone one player on the roster that we cannot afford to lose due to injury, its Brian Delaney.

Less Weakness and More Unknown...

Offensive Line: This is going to be the most interesting story line (because I think Benkert WILL be the starting QB) But our Offensive line is going to consist of several returning players, several new players and several transfer players. We're going to have some more experience, but not experience playing together. Transferring in are John Montelus, Colin McGovern, and Brandon Pertile. All are seniors and have experience at the power 5 level... so that's good. Our JRs and SRs returning are Jack McDonald, Steven Moss, Jack English, and Jake Fieler. Add in a few SOs that have experience in Ben Knutson, R.J. Proctor as well as the incoming freshmen, which I'm sure are going to be mixed into the shuffle (I think Fannin will be getting reps at Center VERY quickly) and who the hell knows what we have, but that's certainly more bodies that we had last year. ... I already miss Eric Smith though, what a boss.

Quarterback - I think Benkert is the starter... I hope he is, and I hope he's improved. I think he was great at times last year and was really bad at times last year. I'm hoping that the offensive line provides more protection because we have a helluva lot of options to throw to. But if not Benkert, who? Marvin Zanders will make things interesting, but I really, really would love to have some GD consistency at QB. It'll be nice if Cross and Abramson (His HS tape still has me wanting to see him take some snaps for us) or Lindell Stone progress and get a few reps this season, but I want, for the first time in a long A$$ time, to have some consistent QB play. I think it will be Benkert, I think he will have improved from last year, and I'm thinking we'll go bowling, but darn if that's still an unknown.

Lemme know what you think. Go Hoos!
