I think you're taking it a bit too literally. I'm sure it was just a

light-hearted ribbing at those two teams. I don't know why UCLA was mentioned but back when USC was winning consecutive championships, it definitely felt like they had perfected the art of calling lines that favored them without being caught. So, in my mind, the joke is warranted with respect to USC.

And I wouldn't say it's all that hard to get away with. I haven't been to a dual match in a couple years, but when I used to go all the time I'd always see the most horrendous overrules (or lack thereof) from the chair umpires. It was almost laughable how bad the chair umps were at overruling the correct balls. I've seen Shabaz make out calls with the ball inside the lines and then smile incredulously at the lack of an overrule. And on the flip side I've seen Jarmere Jenkins correctly call a ball that was 3 to 4 inches out and then get overruled on that call. It was at indoors and the chair ump even went so far as to call the UVA fans homers for showing discontent.

Now, maybe things have changed. As I said, I haven't been in person to watch for a couple of years. But from my experience, college players know how unreliable college chair umps are and plenty try to push those boundaries.
