I had to fire someone today

He showed up to work everyday and on time. I hired him based on his education, his experience and his references. The one question mark was that he had never worked on a DOE nuclear site, a place with very strict rules and consistently tight tolerances. I took a chance on him, thinking I could coach him up and fill any gaps in his skill set. It quickly became apparent that his work ethic was lacking, his commitment questionable and his focus suspect. He showed up but he did not give 100%. I have young guys that I am trying to teach. Having an older "veteran" engineer exercising poor work practices around them was counterproductive to their development. It quickly became apparent he must go. So I fired him. Now we all must pick up the slack. We are short handed and people are having to fill roles which they are unfamiliar with. These are high character people however, who accept the challenge and ultimately want the best for the department. The moral of the story. They don't all work out. The important thing is to recognize when there is a bad fit, realize that a change needs to be made and then have fortitude to face it head on. Our group is now stronger and closer because of it.
