Arena implied going overseas to develop technical skills is optimal.


He cited El Tri as an example.

I don't even know if American soccer is even "tougher" than the rest of the world. We are certainly bigger ... but that doesn't make us tougher. Certainly, we are not as fit as some of the other nations. Plenty of times we ran out of gas in the 2H.

I don't think our players are even better athletes ... especially on the backline. We get continually beat by smaller, stronger, faster athletic forwards.

The US lost its identity. The two things you could always count on:
1. A big strong backline.
2. Good goaltending.

Now we have neither along with forwards who are better technically ... but have little chemistry. I'd like to see some fast wings (Gooch, Pulisic, Yedlin, etc.) and hope to get lucky finding a 9 (Altidore, Wood, Morriss, etc.). Unfortunately, our middle is a mess. It needs a complete overhaul. They're terrible.
